The concept of training German Shepherds as cop dogs were not acceptable for the Europeans. In fact, they thought that it was too expensive to do so. As a result they were only used as guard dogs. But due to their unprecedented performance during World War I, this outlook changed.

Today the German Shepherd cop dog is necessary in every reputed law-enforcement agency. They have proven to be indispensable as companions as well as trackers. Some dogs have a very keen sense of smell and this has been developed further to enable them to detect explosive devices and prohibited drugs without raising any attention.

German Shepherds are really unparalleled regarding its sense of smell. Given the proper training, it can find out corpses. They were of significant use during the First World War. It became immediately popular in America but due to the bad image of Germany after the World War II, the canine’s fame declined.

The Nazi German association with these canines ended up in renaming German Shepherds into American Shepherds or Alsatian dogs. This was to stop the negative undertone of them and maintain the characteristics they were initially renowned for – loyal, good tempered and smart dogs.

Following this it has become by far one of the most favoured dogs in the United States and other parts of the world. As cop dogs the German Shepherd serves many purposes. In order to suppress criminals or controlling the public it uses its bark and hold technique to cause fear in unmanageable masses. Apart from this it has been trained as a search and rescue dog. The dogs are treated with great esteem and are equipped with bulletproof vests to guard them. It is considered a felony to harm or kill German Shepherd cop dogs.
