American Foxhound – A Versatile Dog Breed
The American Foxhound is a large impressive looking breed that closely resembles a Beagle in looks. The dog generally stands between 21 to 25 inches and weighs from 65 to 75 pounds. This breeds athletic sleek body is covered with a smooth coat of tan and white, red and white or black red and white combination. The strong, straight and well boned legs gave this breed immense speed and stamina.
The American Foxhound is believed to be in existence in the Crown Colony – long before it was given the name America. This breed originated from the English dogs that were brought to the New World in 1650 by Robert Brooke.
In Great Britain, these dogs were highly acclaimed for their excellent hunting abilities. The British landed gentry utilizes these dogs to hunt foxes. In a fox hunt, hunters on horseback follow packs of American Foxhounds. The deep and booming melodious voice will distinctly change to alert the hunters when a prey is found. Settlers of the New World utilize these dogs to hunt foxes as well. American Foxhound is a ferocious breed thus it was rumored that the dog have been used by the colonizers to hunt Indians.
The crossing between English Hounds and the dogs of Irish and French settlers resulted to the development of a new breed – the American Foxhound. The American Foxhound, a versatile breed of dog was born.
An American Foxhound is basically a hunting dog. These dogs would be happiest if they are hunting. This breed is equipped with a sensitive scenting ability, strength and stamina and a strong prey drive. Once this dog has found an interesting scent nothing can stop the dog from trailing the prey. As the breed name suggests, foxes are the usual prey of these dogs although these hunting dogs will not pass up the chance to run after any animal.That the dog will be highly valued by hunter is a given fact.
American Foxhounds are acclaimed for their intense hunting drives. These courageous hunters though have a sweet and loving personality. These energetic dogs turn into placid pets with gentle disposition at home. Unlike other breeds, American Foxhound does not give its loyalty to just one person. These hunting dogs form a strong bond with the family but these dogs are noted to bond closely with the children.
